What your child learned
Belly breath teaches diaphragmatic breathing — slow, deep breathing driven by the diaphragm rather than shallow chest breaths. For 5–6 year olds, it's the most reliable first tool of emotional regulation: it physically slows the heart rate, shifts the nervous system out of fight-or-flight, and gives the thinking brain a moment to catch up. The three-count keeps the technique short enough to use in-the-moment, and pairing it with a repeatable parent script (the 'parent bridge') helps children recall the tool at home, at school, and out in the world.
